10 Lippy Tips

1. Always exfoliate your lips. Otherwise your lip product will flake and create texture on your lips.

2. Always moisturise your lips before using lip products.

3. Always moisturise your lips after you have removed your lip product. Just like you moisturise your skin after a shower.

4. Test any and all lip products before you buy them by holding the item up in front of your lips before a mirror. Hold it so that no part of your lips is seen, just the product.

5. Make almost every lip colour suit you by lining your lips with a colour the shade of your skin or a tad bit darker than your lips. Smack your lips a few times to soften the edges of that line and then apply the lip colour mostly in the middle and blend it outwards.

6. No need to own a lip liner of every shade, black women can use brown liners to create that pretty gradient into any lip colour. I recommend your eyebrow pencil which shouldn’t be black black but more black brown or dark brown. (unless your brows are black black.) Do not line your beautiful lips with a harsh black pencil.

7. Don’t let your lips compete with your eyes. Choose a focus.

8. Your perfect red can be easily determined based on whether your skin is cool or warm. Cool-toned skin can wear cool bluish reds while warm tones can go for warm orangey reds. Lucky neutrals can wear both. Sometimes, your foundation tone can open up more possibilities for you.

9. Take advantage of neutral lip colours. Lip glosses have their place. Sometimes, a nice nude lip colour ups the ante a bit more than gloss can. Find your perfect nude and work it.

10. Experiment with colour. Trust me. Women of colour can pull off almost anything with a great lip liner.
